A hollow or depressed area; downward or inward displacement.

1. Physiology. A lowering or decrease of functional activity.
2. Medicine. A mental state of depressed mood characterized by feelings of sadness and despair, social withdrawal, lack of pleasure in most activities, thoughts of suicide, feelings of low self-esteem, insomnia, eating and sleep disturbances.
