Biochemistry. A nucleotide containing the purin base adenin, the sugar ribose and two phosphate groups. ADP is produced by hydrolysis the terminal phosphate of ATP. It is converted back to ATP by an energy-generating process (e.g., oxidative phosphorylation). ADP and ATP are together the main substances of the biological energy transfer.
