Cell biology. Gap junction is an electrical synapse, i.e. a connection between two cells that allows small molecules such as ions to cross directly from the cytoplasm of one cell to the cytoplasm of the other. Each gap junction consists of hundreds of transmembrane proteins called connexons. A connexon is made up of six identical subunits (connexins).
