Study type: Medical/biological study (experimental study)

Influence of extremely-low-frequency magnetic field on antioxidative melatonin properties in AT478 murine squamous cell carcinoma culture med./bio.

Published in: Biol Trace Elem Res 2004; 102 (1-3): 227-243

Aim of study (acc. to author)

To study the effects of extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields and antioxidant supplementation (melatonin, 10-3, 10-4 and 10-5 M; 24 h or 72 h), alone or in combination, on antioxidant enzyme activities and on the level of lipid peroxidation in a carcinoma cell line in vitro.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

After melatonin treatment alone, antioxidative enzyme activities were increased and the malondialdehyde level was decreased.
Exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic field alone caused an increase of both superoxide dismutase enzyme activities and malondialdehyde level, but the influence on glutathione peroxidase enzyme activity was negligible.
All enzyme activities in culture medium containing melatonin (all concentrations) were significantly diminished after exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic field compared to cells treated with melatonin alone. Also malondialdehyde levels were significantly decreased after co-exposure to melatonin and extremely low frequency magnetic field.
The authors conclude that the data suggest that extremely low frequency magnetic field attenuates antioxidative actions of melatonin on cellular level.
