Aim of study (acc. to author)

To evaluate the possible effect of exposure to an electromagnetic field on oxidative stress in the eye of rats and the prophylactic effect of vitamin C.

32 male rats were divided into four groups: 1.) control group, 2.) vitamin C administration, 3.) exposure and 4.) exposure + vitamin C administration (each group n=8).

In exposed samples, the enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase were significantly decreased in comparison to the control group, while an administration of vitamin C increased these enzyme activities and brought them to normal levels with no significant differences compared to the control group. Additionally, in exposed rats, the concentration of malondialdehyde was significantly increased in comparison to the control. An administration of vitamin C prevented these effects.
The authors conclude that exposure to an electromagnetic field led to oxidative stress in the eye tissue and that vitamin C could prevent it.
