Study type: Medical/biological study (experimental study)

Effects on G2/M phase cell cycle distribution and aneuploidy formation of exposure to a 60 Hz electromagnetic field in combination with ionizing radiation or hydrogen peroxide in L132 nontumorigenic human lung epithelial cells med./bio.

Published in: Korean J Physiol Pharmacol 2015; 19 (2): 119-124

Aim of study (acc. to author)

The effects of exposure of human lung epithelial cells to a 60 Hz magnetic field alone or with co-exposure to gamma radiation or hydrogen peroxide on the cell cycle distribution and on aneuploidy should be investigated.

Background/further details

Cells were divided into the following groups: 1) exposure to a 1 mT magnetic field, 2) exposure to a 2 mT magnetic field, 3) exposure to hydrogen peroxide from the beginning of the exposure phase (0.05, 0.1, 0.5 mM), 4) exposure to gamma radiation at the beginning of the exposure phase (0.1, 0.5, 1, 2 Gy), 5) co-exposure to 2 mT magnetic field and 0.05 mM hydrogen peroxide simultaneously and 6) co-exposure to 2 mT magnetic field and 0.5 Gy gamma radiation (prior to magnetic field exposure). For each group and test, a separate sham exposure was conducted.
Each test was performed in triplicate and at least in four independent experiments.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

No significant changes could be found between magnetic field exposed (groups 1 and 2) and sham exposed cells.
In groups 3 (hydrogen peroxide) and 4 (gamma radiation), significant changes in the cell cycle distribution and aneuploidy could be detected between exposed and sham exposed cells.
Exposure to the magnetic field and co-exposure to hydrogen peroxide (group 5) or gamma radiation (group 6) did not result in an enhancement of the effects of hydrogen peroxide or gamma radiation alone.
The authors conclude that exposure of human lung epithelial cells to a 60 Hz magnetic field has no effect on the cell cycle distribution and aneuploidy and does not enhance the effects of gamma radiation or hydrogen peroxide.
