Effect of whole-body exposure to the 848.5 MHz code division multiple access (CDMA) electromagnetic field on adult neurogenesis in the young, healthy rat brain med./bio.

Published in: Int J Radiat Biol 2015; 91 (4): 354-359

Aim of study (acc. to author)

The effects of an acute whole body exposure of rats to a 848.5 MHz electromagnetic field on the neurogenesis in the adult brain should be investigated.

Background/further details

36 rats were into the 6 following groups (n=6 per group): 1) cage control for 1 h and 2) 8 h exposure per day, 3) sham exposure for 1h and 4) 8 h exposure per day , 5) exposure for 1 h and (6) 8 h per day. All experiments were repeated three times.

Exposure Parameters
Exposure 1: 845.5 MHz
Exposure duration: continuous for 1 h daily, 5 days per week, for 2 weeks
Exposure 2: 845.5 MHz

Frequency 845.5 MHz
Type
Exposure duration continuous for 1 h daily, 5 days per week, for 2 weeks
Exposure setup
Exposure source
Chamber size of each cage was 39 Π23.5 Π18 cm
Setup a realistic CDMA signal was generated inside the reverberation chamber (240 Œ 232.5 Œ 161.6 cm, wall thickness 12.5 cm); there was a wooden table (140 Œ 100 x 70 cm ) inside the chamber, on which a maximum of eight animal cages could be placed with no change in field uniformity; electromagnetic waves in the experimental region of the reverberation chamber came from all directions, with equal amplitude; room temperature was controlled at 22 ± 2°C
Sham exposure A sham exposure was conducted.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

No significant differences in cell proliferation were found between the exposure groups (5 and 6) and the corresponding sham exposure groups (3 and 4) and cage control groups (1 and 2) in the investigated brain areas.
The authors conclude that they could not find any effect of an acute whole body exposure of rats to a 848.5 MHz electromagnetic field on the neurogenesis in the adult brain.
