Study type: Medical/biological study (experimental study)

Exposure to radiation from global system for mobile communications at 1,800 MHz significantly changes gene expression in rat hippocampus and cortex med./bio.

Published in: Environmentalist 2008; 28 (4): 458-465

Aim of study (acc. to author)

To study whether exposure to the irradiation from a GSM mobile phone at 1800 MHz has an effect upon the gene expression pattern in rat brain cortex and hippocampus.

Background/further details

8 male rats were assigned to an exposure group (n=4) and a sham exposure group (n=4). The SAR-level for the brain was with 30 mW/kg below the limit for mobile phone emissions set by ICNIRP.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

The genes did not significantly discriminate between exposed and sham exposed animals. The gene oncology analysis of the differentially expressed genes of both groups revealed four highly significant altered gene categories in both cortex and hippocampus (transmembrane receptor activity, receptor activity, cell surface receptor linked signal transduction and G-protein coupled receptor signaling pathway).
Most of these categories are connected with membrane functions what indicates that the cell membrane is an important target for electromagnetic field effects.
