Aim of study (acc. to author)

To investigate the effects of the co-exposure of 50 Hz extremely low frequency magnetic field plus the aneugen vinblastine on micronucleus formation in human lymphocyte in vitro.

Background/further details

The lymphocytes cultures were separated from blood sample of 18 subjects.
Vinblastine was applied in four different concentrations: 5, 10, and 15 ng/ml.

Increased vinblastine concentrations resulted in an increased micronucleus and apoptosis frequency and a decreased nuclear division index.
No statistically significant effect of extremely low frequency magnetic field alone on micronucleus frequency or apoptosis was observed, but the nuclear division index was significantly higher in the 800 µT group compared to control group, suggesting an effect of extremely low frequency magnetic field on cell proliferation.
Co-exposed cells revealed no statistically significant effect on micronucleus induction or apoptosis frequency, but a significant decrease in nuclear division index compared to only extremely low frequency magnetic field exposed cells.
