研究目的(著者による)

1) To study brain manganese (Mn) levels in rats with or without experimental manganese administration (2.88 mg Mn2+, applied at the start of the experiment) and with or without the exposure to electromagnetic field at the end of acute or longterm exposures.
2) To observe rats behaviour at the end of longterm exposures (after 12 weeks) with possible implication to manganese or electromagnetic field exposure.

Manganese has a neurotoxic potential as a result of professional (metalurgy) and nonprofessional (traffic) exposure, when in excess in the brain.

General information

Four groups of rats per test (acute or subchronic) were treated as follows: no exposure, exposure to inorganic manganese (Mn), exposure to EMF, and exposure to EMF + Mn. Inorganic manganese compound (MnSO4*4H2O) was applied at the start of the experiment by intratracheal instillation.

In acute test, significant increase in brain manganese level was found in rats exposed to both factors (electromagnetic fields and manganese) as compared to Mn administration only.
Within subchronic test such interaction did not appear, but in vivo observation of exposed rats (exposure to Mn and/or electromagnetic field) at the end of the test have demonstrated signficant behavioral changes as compared to unexposed animals.
