Physiology. A negative regulatory effect on physiological processes at the molecular, cellular, or systemic level. For example, the process by which a cell decreases the number of receptors to a hormone or neurotransmitter in order to reduce the response to the stimulus. The major regulatory sites of a cell include membrane receptors, genes, mRNAs, and proteins.
Opposed to up-regulation.
