Aim of study (acc. to author)

To examine the long-term effect on human eye on the basis of 200 workers exposed to microwave doses within the limits acknowledged by regulations over 6 month to 12 years.

Additional info Two groups of subjects were examined: The first group included 200 workers employed at installations generating high intensity waves . The second group included 200 controls having no contact to microwave radiation. In each subject from these groups examination with an "Oculus"opthalmoscope and slit lamp was done after prior dilation of the pupil with homatropine or neosynephrine.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

The group of 200 workers was compared with 200 persons of a control group. The findings of fundus examination were elaborated statistically. Pathological changes could be found in 84% in the exposed group and in 74% of the control group, respectively. These results demonstrate that there exist a possibility of harmful effects of microwave radiation even at intensities within the limits, if microwave exposure is sufficently long (over 4 - 5 years).
