Aim of study (acc. to author)

The effects of exposure of cannabis seeds to 50 Hz magnetic fields on germination should be investigated.

Background/further details

The cannabis seeds were exposed to a 50 mT or a 70 mT magnetic field for 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 210 and 240 minutes respectively. In addition, a control group without exposure was used. 100 seeds and 3 replicates were used for each condition.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

Exposure to the magnetic field of 70 mT resulted in significantly higher numbers of correctly developed seedlings in all exposure durations compared to the control group. In the case of exposure to the 50 mT magnetic field, only some exposure durations (90, 120 and 240 min) showed a significantly higher number of correctly developed seedlings compared to the control group.
There were no significant differences in germination capacity and energy capacity after exposure to a magnetic field for either 50 mT or 70 mT compared to the control group.
The authors conclude that exposure to 50 Hz magnetic fields might result in a decrease of developmental defects in cannabis seedlings.
