Influence of alternating magnetic fields on two-dimensional tumor growth med./bio.

Published in: Electro Magnetobiol 2000; 19 (3): 351-355

Aim of study (acc. to author)

The effects of exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic fields on in vitro glioblastoma tumor growth should be investigated.

Background/further details

C6 rat glioblastoma cells were plated in Petri dishes and divided into the following groups (5 dishes per group): 1) exposure to 10 Hz magnetic field, 2) exposure to 20 Hz magnetic field, 3) exposure to 30 Hz magnetic field, 4) exposure to 40 Hz magnetic field, 5) exposure to 50 Hz magnetic field, 6) control group. Dishes were examined every 10 hours during exposure.

Setup a pair of horizontal rectangular coils (25 x 15 cm) was placed in a pseudo-Helmholtz configuration (distance between the coils was 15 cm); Petri dishes were placed between the coils; the magnetic field was uniform within 7% in the center of the coils; the whole system was placed in a temperature-controlled box kept at 37.0 ± 0.1°C

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

Tumor growth was increased at each frequency of the magnetic field (groups 1-5) compared to the control group. The highest growth rate was observed at 20 Hz (group 2).
(Remark EMF-Portal: There was no data on statistical significance of these results.)
The authors conclude that exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic fields might accelerate the in vitro glioblastoma tumor growth.
