DNA Strand Breaks in Fibroblasts Exposed to a 50-Hz Magnetic Field med./bio.

Published in: Proceedings of the 12th Asia Pacific Physics Conference (APPC12), 2013. JPS, 2014: 012057; ISBN 978-4-89027-101-6

Aim of study (acc. to author)

The genotoxic effect of exposure of mouse fibroblasts to 50 Hz magnetic fields should be investigated.

Background/further details

It should be examined whether previous results on DNA strand breaks (Ivancsits et al. 2002, Ivancsits et al. 2003, Ivancsits et al. 2003, Ivancsits et al. 2005) are reproducible.
For each exposure condition and duration, a separate sham exposure was conducted.

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

At 100 µT intermittent exposure, there was no significantly difference in DNA strand breaks between exposed and sham exposed cells at any point in time. At 500 µT intermittent exposure, there were significantly more DNA strand breaks in exposed cells compared to sham exposed cells after 18 h and 24 hours. At 1000 µT intermittent exposure, there were significantly more strand breaks after 18 hours only compared to sham exposed cells.
In continuous exposure conditions, there were significantly more DNA strand breaks in cells exposed to 500 µT compared to sham exposed cells after 18 hours only.
The authors conclude that exposure of mouse fibroblasts to 50 Hz magnetic fields might have a genotoxic effect.
