Effects of 1950 MHz W-CDMA-like signal on human spermatozoa med./bio.

Published in: Bioelectromagnetics 2016; 37 (6): 373-381

Aim of study (acc. to author)

The effects of exposure of human sperms to a 1950 MHz electromagnetic field (W-CDMA) on sperm motility and oxidative stress should be investigated.

Background/further details

Good-quality sperms from semen samples from 50 healthy subjects were isolated and 2 specimens were created from each sample for exposure and sham exposure, respectively (remark EMF-Portal: the real number of specimens in each group is unclear as there were 2 exposure groups (SAR of 2 W/kg and 6 W/kg) and two respective sham exposure groups).
Positive control for oxidative stress was performed.

Exposure setup
Exposure source
Chamber petri dishes in exposure system inside incubator
Setup exposure system consisted of two waveguides (one for exposure, the other one for sham exposure); it was placed in the incubator under controlled conditions at 37°C with high humidity; each waveguide contained one or two specimens at a time; temperature difference between the two waveguides during exposure was kept to less than 0.1°C
Sham exposure A sham exposure was conducted.
Additional info waveguides that were used for the real or sham exposure were randomized by a computer

Main outcome of study (acc. to author)

No significant differences were found between the exposure groups and respective sham exposure groups in any parameter.
The authors conclude that there is no evidence for any effect of exposure of human sperms to a 1950 MHz electromagnetic field (W-CDMA) on sperm motility and oxidative stress.
