To test whether providing individuals with electromagnetic hypersensitivity with feedback about their ability to discriminate an active mobile phone signal from a sham exposure had any impact on their symptoms or their perceived sensitivity to mobile phones.
In therapeutic interventions, individual feedback can be used to challenge beliefs and influence symptom severity.
Perceived sensitivity and symptom severity of 58 participants with self-reported electromagnetic hypersensitivity (32 female and 26 male, 18 to 75 years, 83% Caucasian) were measured at 3 times: 1) initial provocation study on the ability to correctly detect mobile phone signals (see publication 13464); 2) feedback intervention (average 1.6 years after provocation study): individual results in the provocation study (31 participants were classified as correct; 27 as incorrect); and 3) follow-up 6 months after feedback intervention.
